A made-to-measure book

Ava is often the first word a girl learns to write — three letters, and this time they're printed right across her own book cover

A personalized storybook where Ava isn't reading about someone else's adventure. She's the one taking it — her name on the cover, her face in the pictures, her story on every page.

Here's how a book for Ava could look

Pick a theme, upload a photo, and your child becomes the hero of the story — with their name on the cover and inside.

The covers above are samples — the illustrations were created by artificial intelligence and the children in them aren't real. Your book is made from the photo you upload.

Three letters that fill a whole cover

Ava is one of the shortest given names in the English-speaking world, and that shortness is a gift to a book cover. Long names have to shrink to fit; Ava gets to sit large, in letters big enough to trace with a finger. It's also a perfect palindrome — A-V-A reads the same from either end — which is exactly the kind of thing a five-year-old discovers on her own and then announces to everyone at dinner. Most children need years before they can write their full name without help. Ava usually manages hers before her first day of school: down, up, down for the V, two proud round A's on either side. That's what makes a book with this name on it land differently. She isn't just being read to — she can point at the cover and read the most important word on it herself. There's a read-aloud bonus hiding in the sound, too. Ava opens and closes on a vowel, so it never gets swallowed at the end of a sentence the way names ending in consonant clusters do. When the story pauses on 'and then Ava saw it,' the name rings — which matters more than you'd think in a book meant to be read out loud at bedtime, by a tired parent doing all the voices. Inside, the story is written around Ava by name, so every scene belongs to her rather than to a nameless little girl who happens to look familiar.

Where Ava comes from and what it means

For such a small name, Ava carries a surprisingly long argument among name scholars. One camp traces it to the Latin avis, meaning bird — a fitting root for a name that sounds light enough to fly. Another sees it as a medieval form of Eve, from the Hebrew Chava, meaning life itself. And a third points to the old Germanic root av-, the same one hiding inside Aveline and Evelyn. The lovely part is that Ava doesn't have to choose: bird, life, and a thousand years of history all fit in those three letters. The name has real medieval credentials, too. A ninth-century Saint Ava was venerated in France, and Frau Ava of Melk, who died in 1127, is the first woman we know by name to have written poetry in the German language — not a bad patron for a girl getting her own book. For most of the twentieth century the name belonged, in the public imagination, to exactly one person: Ava Gardner, whose green-eyed glamour kept it filed under 'movie star' rather than 'baby name.' Then something shifted. In the early 2000s Ava came roaring back, and it has held a spot near the very top of the charts in the United States, Britain, and Australia for the better part of two decades since. That makes it a modern classic in the truest sense: your Ava may well meet another Ava at school, but she'll never meet anyone who thinks her name sounds dated — it managed the rare trick of becoming hugely popular without ever feeling trendy.

Little names for Ava

  • Ava — The rare name that's already shorter than most nicknames, so many families simply never shorten it. Two syllables, open at both ends — easy to call up the stairs and impossible to mumble.
  • Avie — The most common pet form, warm and a little softer than the full name. This is the version that tends to live at home — on birthday cards, at bedtime, and in the middle of a hug.
  • Av — The single-syllable playground version, usually adopted by siblings and best friends who are in too much of a hurry for the second A.
  • Aves — A playful family variant with a wink in it — and, for parents who favor the Latin origin, accidentally the actual Latin word for birds.

My daughters love the book! We read it every evening before bedtime. The story is so sweet and lovingly written, and the pictures are beautiful. My girls feel really special because their own name appears in the book. A great keepsake forever! Absolutely recommend. ❤️

We got the book as a birthday present and it turned out perfectly. The print quality pleasantly surprised me – hardcover, nice paper and illustrations printed in fine detail. The characters are drawn so well that my daughter recognized her sister, me, the giraffe and herself :) She really likes the story and now it’s her favourite book, we read it almost every evening. On top of that, it will remain a lovely keepsake that she’ll come back to even in a few years. I definitely recommend it.

An absolutely stunning book made to order. It's not only a beautiful gift, but a keepsake for a lifetime. Our sons are thrilled. Not only did they find “themselves” in the book, but the whole story also takes place in their favourite place, which is the ice rink. The whole book is accompanied by wonderful pictures, and the dedication from us, the parents, is just the cherry on top. I warmly recommend it. Not only will all the “heroes of the book” be thrilled, but so will you, as soon as you see the book with your own eyes :)

Our daughter was absolutely thrilled, she looked through it several times in a row and declared that it's pretty, she hasn't had enough of it yet and we read it every day before bedtime.

A great, sweet and inspiring book that won us over from the very first pages! ❤️ The story of Алекс and Марая inspired us to go to the forest together, to enjoy the autumn beauty, to learn more about the animals and their food, to collect pine cones, hazelnuts, acorns and chestnuts and to create a wonderful autumn decoration at home. 🍂🍁 We love books that we don’t just read, but turn into real family adventures! Thank you for this magical experience! 🥰

The book for my grandson’s christening arrived and I’m thrilled with it. I’m already looking forward to us flipping through it together as soon as he grows up a little. It’s great that you can also add a favourite thing or toy and it gets worked into the story. It’s great!!!

Popular questions

Both answers have scholarship behind them. Ava is documented as a medieval short form of Eva, but it also stands on independent roots — the Latin avis (bird) and the Germanic av-. In practice it has been its own name for over a thousand years, with its own saints and its own poet, so nobody will ever treat it as a nickname for something longer.
