A made-to-measure book

The day's eye: a storybook that opens up for Daisy

Daisy began as an Old English description of a flower that opens at sunrise and closes at dusk. A bedtime book with Daisy as its heroine follows the same rhythm: it opens at the start of an adventure and closes when she's ready for sleep.

Why Daisy suits a heroine

Some names need explaining before a story can begin. Daisy doesn't. It's two bright syllables, easy for a four-year-old to read on her own cover, and it has a sound that already feels like the opening of a picture book. A narrator can say it softly at the end of a chapter or call it out across a misty valley, and it works both ways.

In a personalised book, Daisy isn't a name dropped into blank spaces. She is the one who holds the wand, reads the map and carries the posy home. Her name is on the cover and runs through the story, and the hero in the illustrations has her face, taken from a single photo. For a child whose name comes from a flower, there's an extra pleasure in it: daisies turn up everywhere, from lawns and park verges to the edges of school playing fields, and every time she spots one she has a small reminder of her own book.

Daisy is also a name that grows up well. A toddler called Daisy and a teenager called Daisy sound equally right. That makes a book with her name in the title one she can keep long after she's outgrown it, and it will still feel like hers.

The name also gives a story-writer something to play with. A heroine called Daisy can wake up with the morning light, find a single white flower on a doorstep at the start of her adventure, or learn that her name hides a secret meaning. None of that has to be spelled out on every page, but small touches like these make the book feel as if it was written for her, not simply printed with her name. Even the wording of the dedication can lean on it: a line about the day's eye, or about a little flower that always turns towards the sun.

Where the name Daisy comes from

The word goes back to Old English dæges ēage, "day's eye". The common daisy folds its white petals over its yellow centre at night and opens them again in the morning, so to the people who named it, the flower looked like an eye waking up with the sun. Chaucer was already praising the "eye of the day" in the fourteenth century, which makes Daisy one of the oldest flower words still in everyday English.

As a girl's name, Daisy took a slightly roundabout route. In the nineteenth century it was a popular pet form of Margaret, because the French Marguerite is also the word for the daisy. Over time it stood on its own, and the late-Victorian enthusiasm for flower names helped it along. By the 1890s the music-hall song "Daisy Bell", the one about a bicycle built for two, had made it famous enough to be hummed all over the country. In 1961 that same song became one of the first pieces of music ever sung by a computer.

In literature Daisy has two well-known sides: Henry James's spirited Daisy Miller and F. Scott Fitzgerald's dreamy Daisy Buchanan. In the last few decades the name has had a strong revival in England and Wales, where it has stayed a familiar choice in the national baby-name lists. It sits comfortably among the gentle, old-fashioned names British parents have come back to: short, warm and a little bit country garden.

The flower itself has a long history in English folklore. Children have been making daisy chains on summer lawns for centuries, splitting each stem with a thumbnail and threading the next flower through. There's an old country saying that spring hasn't truly arrived until you can put your foot on seven daisies at once, and the petal game "he loves me, he loves me not" is usually played with a daisy too. Few names come with that many small rituals already attached, which is part of why Daisy feels so much at home in a children's story.

In the UK there is no name day for Daisy, so the natural day to celebrate is her birthday, or the first warm morning in spring when the lawns go white.

Ways to say Daisy

  • Daisy — The full name, and already as short as most nicknames. It's the form that goes on the cover and the one the story uses in moments that matter.
  • Dais / Daise — A quick, one-syllable version for calling her in from the garden or shouting from the bottom of the stairs.
  • Daisy-May — A playful double-barrelled form many families use as an affectionate pet name, even when May isn't her middle name.
  • Daisy-Doo — A silly, sing-song version for the youngest Daisys, usually heard at bath time or bedtime.
  • Day — A short, quiet form some families use, and a neat nod to the name's original meaning, "day's eye".

My daughters love the book! We read it every evening before bedtime. The story is so sweet and lovingly written, and the pictures are beautiful. My girls feel really special because their own name appears in the book. A great keepsake forever! Absolutely recommend. ❤️

We got the book as a birthday present and it turned out perfectly. The print quality pleasantly surprised me – hardcover, nice paper and illustrations printed in fine detail. The characters are drawn so well that my daughter recognized her sister, me, the giraffe and herself :) She really likes the story and now it’s her favourite book, we read it almost every evening. On top of that, it will remain a lovely keepsake that she’ll come back to even in a few years. I definitely recommend it.

An absolutely stunning book made to order. It's not only a beautiful gift, but a keepsake for a lifetime. Our sons are thrilled. Not only did they find “themselves” in the book, but the whole story also takes place in their favourite place, which is the ice rink. The whole book is accompanied by wonderful pictures, and the dedication from us, the parents, is just the cherry on top. I warmly recommend it. Not only will all the “heroes of the book” be thrilled, but so will you, as soon as you see the book with your own eyes :)
