A made-to-measure book

For four hundred years English fairy tales have sent a boy called Jack up the beanstalk — this one is written about yours

Jack and the Beanstalk. Jack and Jill. The House That Jack Built. English storytelling has always saved its best adventures for boys named Jack — and now the lead role finally goes to your Jack, with his name in the title and his face in the illustrations.

Here's how a book for Jack could look

Pick a theme, upload a photo, and your child becomes the hero of the story — with their name on the cover and inside.

The covers above are samples — the illustrations were created by artificial intelligence and the children in them aren't real. Your book is made from the photo you upload.

The name English stories were built on

Open a collection of classic English fairy tales and count how many of the heroes answer to the same name. Jack climbs the beanstalk and comes back with the golden harp. Jack the Giant Killer outwits monsters twice his size. Jack builds the house that everything else in the rhyme depends on, jumps over the candlestick, tumbles down the hill with Jill, sits in the corner as Little Jack Horner pulling out plums, and on cold mornings it's Jack Frost who painted the windows overnight. No other name in the English nursery comes close to that record. For centuries, whenever a storyteller needed a boy who was quick-witted, brave and just cheeky enough to get away with it, that boy was called Jack.

There was always one catch: the Jack of those tales was deliberately nobody in particular. He was 'any boy' — a blank the listener was meant to fill in for themselves, which is exactly why the tellers kept reusing him. Your Jack is not a blank. He has a particular grin, a particular way of running ahead on the path, a particular opinion about how a bedtime story ought to end. This book closes the gap between the two Jacks: the name on the cover is his, the boy in the pictures is drawn from his photo, and the adventure inside happens to him rather than to some boy in general. Four hundred years of storytelling habit, finally pointed at the right Jack.

From 'little John' to a name that stands alone

Jack didn't start out as a name at all. In medieval England, John was so common that it sprouted pet forms, and one of them — Jankin, 'little John' — slowly wore down through Jackin to Jack. Because it grew out of John, it quietly inherits John's old meaning, 'God is gracious'; but everyday English gave it a second meaning all of its own. The name spread so widely that it escaped the nursery and soaked into the language: a jack-of-all-trades can fix anything, a lumberjack fells trees, a jackpot pays out, sailors were jack tars, the flag on a Royal Navy ship's bow is a jack, and there's a Jack grinning from every deck of cards. When English needed a word for 'any capable fellow', it reached for Jack — no other boy's name has been worked into the language so thoroughly.

The name has long since outgrown that beginning. Jack has been given as a full name in its own right for well over a century, and its modern run has been remarkable — thirteen straight years as the No. 1 boys' name in England and Wales, year after year at or near the top in Ireland and Scotland, and a permanent fixture high on the lists in Australia. Parents keep choosing it for the same reason the old storytellers did: it is short, warm, and completely without pretension.

It also happens to be a typographic gift. Four letters, one syllable, a strong start and a crisp finish — Jack sits on a book cover the way it sounds when you call it across a garden: clear, bold and impossible to mistake for anything else. In the title of his own book it needs no surname and no explanation; the four letters carry the whole thing.

What a Jack gets called

  • Jack — The name arrives already at its shortest — one syllable with nothing left to trim. It's what he'll hear from his teacher, his grandparents and this book alike, and it sounds equally right for a four-year-old and the man he'll grow into.
  • Jackie — The classic affectionate form for the toddler years. Many Jacks shed it around school age; some grandmothers never let it go.
  • Jack-Jack — The doubled form families reach for when one syllable still isn't cuddly enough — lately with a boost from a certain animated superhero baby.
  • Jay — The initial-sounding nickname for the too-cool phase. A Jack can retreat to it in his teens and quietly come back to Jack afterwards.
  • John or Jackson — It works the other way round, too: plenty of boys christened John or Jackson end up being called Jack every day. A boy who is Jack on the birth certificate skips the detour and owns the original outright.

My daughters love the book! We read it every evening before bedtime. The story is so sweet and lovingly written, and the pictures are beautiful. My girls feel really special because their own name appears in the book. A great keepsake forever! Absolutely recommend. ❤️

We got the book as a birthday present and it turned out perfectly. The print quality pleasantly surprised me – hardcover, nice paper and illustrations printed in fine detail. The characters are drawn so well that my daughter recognized her sister, me, the giraffe and herself :) She really likes the story and now it’s her favourite book, we read it almost every evening. On top of that, it will remain a lovely keepsake that she’ll come back to even in a few years. I definitely recommend it.

An absolutely stunning book made to order. It's not only a beautiful gift, but a keepsake for a lifetime. Our sons are thrilled. Not only did they find “themselves” in the book, but the whole story also takes place in their favourite place, which is the ice rink. The whole book is accompanied by wonderful pictures, and the dedication from us, the parents, is just the cherry on top. I warmly recommend it. Not only will all the “heroes of the book” be thrilled, but so will you, as soon as you see the book with your own eyes :)

A great, sweet and inspiring book that won us over from the very first pages! ❤️ The story of Алекс and Марая inspired us to go to the forest together, to enjoy the autumn beauty, to learn more about the animals and their food, to collect pine cones, hazelnuts, acorns and chestnuts and to create a wonderful autumn decoration at home. 🍂🍁 We love books that we don’t just read, but turn into real family adventures! Thank you for this magical experience! 🥰

The book for my grandson’s christening arrived and I’m thrilled with it. I’m already looking forward to us flipping through it together as soon as he grows up a little. It’s great that you can also add a favourite thing or toy and it gets worked into the story. It’s great!!!

FAQ

Popular questions

Both, historically. Jack began as a medieval pet form of John, but it has stood on its own for generations and nowadays regularly outranks John itself in the naming charts. In the book it is simply the hero's name, exactly as you enter it.
