Here's how a book for Lily could look

Pick a theme, upload a photo, and your child becomes the hero of the story — with their name on the cover and inside.

Why a book with Lily on the cover

A girl called Lily grows up seeing her name everywhere — and almost never meaning her. It sits lowercase in the florist's window, printed on seed packets, tucked into the lyrics of old songs. Lily is one of the few names a child can find in the dictionary before she finds it on a bookshelf. This book turns that around: here Lily is not a flower in the background of somebody else's story, she is the girl the whole story is about, with a capital L on the front cover.

Four letters do something graceful on a cover. Lily is short enough to be set large, and the two tall l's with the dotted i between them give the word a skyline children recognize long before they can read — many a Lily learns to pick out her own name by its shape alone. When the title is typeset, the name carries the line; it doesn't need to share the space.

Inside, the story is written around her, not around a placeholder. Lily walks through every scene by name: she is the one called when the dragon needs distracting, when the rocket needs a pilot, when someone has to take the first brave step. And because the illustrations are made from a photo you upload, the Lily on the page doesn't just share your daughter's name — she has her face, which is the moment most children go quiet and point.

Where the name Lily comes from

Lily is a flower name in the most direct sense: it comes from the Latin lilium, borrowed in turn from the Greek leirion, the word for the white Madonna lily. The trail runs out somewhere older than both languages — the word was most likely picked up from an ancient Mediterranean tongue, which makes Lily, quietly, one of the oldest words a modern girl can carry as a name.

The flower spent centuries as a symbol before it became a first name. White lilies stood for purity and fresh beginnings, painters placed them in their most solemn scenes, and heralds stylized the bloom into the fleur-de-lis on the shields and crowns of French kings. When parents in the late nineteenth century fell in love with botanical names, Lily was among the first to move from the garden to the christening register — at first as an affectionate short form of Lilian, soon as a name standing entirely on its own.

Its second bloom has been remarkable. After fading through the mid-twentieth century, Lily returned in the 1990s and climbed into the top ten girls' names in England and Wales during the 2010s, while in the United States it spent the early 2010s inside the top twenty and still sits near the top of the charts. Families also choose their spelling: Lilly with the doubled l and the vintage Lillie both appear, though the neat four-letter Lily has always led. And the name travels unusually well — German, French and Scandinavian ears all recognize it at once, because their own word for the flower is nearly the same.

What a Lily gets called at home

  • Lil — The everyday shortening — quick to call up the stairs and usually the version school friends settle on first. Many families save it for when Lily is in a hurry, which is most of the time.
  • Lils — The playground plural that isn't a plural. It tends to arrive around the first year of school, usually coined by a best friend, and then sticks well into the teenage years.
  • Lilypad — A toddler-era pet name that borrows from the pond rather than the garden. Ideal for the years when she is still small enough to be scooped up off the sofa.
  • Lilybug — The bedtime variant — soft, silly and strictly for family use. Most Lilys pretend to outgrow it and secretly never do.

My daughters love the book! We read it every evening before bedtime. The story is so sweet and lovingly written, and the pictures are beautiful. My girls feel really special because their own name appears in the book. A great keepsake forever! Absolutely recommend. ❤️

We got the book as a birthday present and it turned out perfectly. The print quality pleasantly surprised me – hardcover, nice paper and illustrations printed in fine detail. The characters are drawn so well that my daughter recognized her sister, me, the giraffe and herself :) She really likes the story and now it’s her favourite book, we read it almost every evening. On top of that, it will remain a lovely keepsake that she’ll come back to even in a few years. I definitely recommend it.

An absolutely stunning book made to order. It's not only a beautiful gift, but a keepsake for a lifetime. Our sons are thrilled. Not only did they find “themselves” in the book, but the whole story also takes place in their favourite place, which is the ice rink. The whole book is accompanied by wonderful pictures, and the dedication from us, the parents, is just the cherry on top. I warmly recommend it. Not only will all the “heroes of the book” be thrilled, but so will you, as soon as you see the book with your own eyes :)

Our daughter was absolutely thrilled, she looked through it several times in a row and declared that it's pretty, she hasn't had enough of it yet and we read it every day before bedtime.

A great, sweet and inspiring book that won us over from the very first pages! ❤️ The story of Алекс and Марая inspired us to go to the forest together, to enjoy the autumn beauty, to learn more about the animals and their food, to collect pine cones, hazelnuts, acorns and chestnuts and to create a wonderful autumn decoration at home. 🍂🍁 We love books that we don’t just read, but turn into real family adventures! Thank you for this magical experience! 🥰

The book for my grandson’s christening arrived and I’m thrilled with it. I’m already looking forward to us flipping through it together as soon as he grows up a little. It’s great that you can also add a favourite thing or toy and it gets worked into the story. It’s great!!!

Both. The story is written with Lily as its main character, so her name runs right through the text, page after page — and the cover title carries it too, set large enough to read from across the room.
