A made-to-measure book

Teddy has meant a bear for over a century — this book gives the name back to your Theodore

In 1902 a toy bear borrowed the nickname Teddy and never gave it back. Consider this a small correction of history: a storybook where Theodore is the hero — his name on the cover, his adventure inside.

Here's how a book for Theodore could look

Pick a theme, upload a photo, and your child becomes the hero of the story — with their name on the cover and inside.

The covers above are samples — the illustrations were created by artificial intelligence and the children in them aren't real. Your book is made from the photo you upload.

A name with its own gravity

Theodore is nine letters and four syllables, and it refuses to be background noise. Some names disappear into a class register; this one sounds like it was waiting for a title page. Set in large type above a painted scene, it reads less like a label and more like an announcement: this story has a hero, and the hero is him.

Most boys named Theodore hear the full version of their name on two occasions — when something is official, and when something is very serious. A storybook adds a third occasion, and it is the best of the three: Theodore printed across a cover simply because the story is about him. Inside, the tale can call him whatever your family calls him — the full Theodore with all its ceremony, or the Teddy that gets shouted up the staircase at dinnertime. Either way, the boy turning the pages knows from the first line that this particular book could never have belonged to anyone else.

There is also the small, practical pleasure of how the name behaves when read aloud. Theodore opens on a soft, stretchable Thee — the sound a parent naturally slows down on at the start of a bedtime chapter — and lands on a gentle, closing door. Not many boys' names carry that much music; his happens to be built for reading out loud, which is precisely the job a storybook gives it, night after night.

From Greek gift to comeback of the decade

Theodore comes from the Greek Theodoros — theos, 'god', and doron, 'gift' — so for more than two thousand years the name has meant 'gift of God'. It has been worn by saints and scholars, a seventh-century Archbishop of Canterbury, Byzantine emperors and early popes, and it travelled across Europe in local dress: Fyodor in Russia (Dostoevsky was one), Teodoro in Italy and Spain, Theodore again — with an accent — in France.

America gave the name its most famous twist. When President Theodore Roosevelt refused to shoot a captive bear on a 1902 hunting trip, a newspaper cartoon of the scene inspired a toymaker to sell a stuffed 'Teddy's bear' — and every teddy bear since has been quietly carrying his nickname. Pop culture kept choosing the name too: the sweetest of the famous cartoon chipmunk trio answers to Theodore.

For decades afterwards, Theodore sat on the shelf of dignified old names — a grandfather's name, people said. Then parents rediscovered exactly that dignity: the name re-entered the American top ten in 2021 and has kept climbing since, and it sits near the top of the charts in England, Canada and Australia as well. A boy named Theodore today carries something rare — a name that is ancient, storied and completely current at the same time.

Teddy, Theo, Ted — the many sizes of Theodore

  • Teddy — The warm, homely size — the version for pyjamas, bedtime and the bear on the pillow that shares it. If he is Teddy at home, a story about Teddy sounds like it was overheard in your own kitchen. No other boy's name doubles as the word for the toy he actually sleeps with — which makes the pairing on a bookshelf feel less like coincidence and more like fate.
  • Theo — The quick, modern cut — two syllables that work equally well on a football pitch and a name tag. Across Europe, Theo now stands on birth certificates by itself, but for your boy it can stay what it does best: the everyday shorthand for a grander Theodore held in reserve.
  • Ted — The no-nonsense single syllable, favoured by boys who have decided that four syllables take too long to say when an adventure is already starting. It is also the version his great-grandfather's generation knew best: a good share of the twentieth century's Teds were Theodores in their Sunday clothes.
  • Theodore — The full ceremonial form — for title pages, first days of school and the moment in a story when the hero finally steps forward. Four syllables that make a sentence slow down and pay attention.

My daughters love the book! We read it every evening before bedtime. The story is so sweet and lovingly written, and the pictures are beautiful. My girls feel really special because their own name appears in the book. A great keepsake forever! Absolutely recommend. ❤️

We got the book as a birthday present and it turned out perfectly. The print quality pleasantly surprised me – hardcover, nice paper and illustrations printed in fine detail. The characters are drawn so well that my daughter recognized her sister, me, the giraffe and herself :) She really likes the story and now it’s her favourite book, we read it almost every evening. On top of that, it will remain a lovely keepsake that she’ll come back to even in a few years. I definitely recommend it.

An absolutely stunning book made to order. It's not only a beautiful gift, but a keepsake for a lifetime. Our sons are thrilled. Not only did they find “themselves” in the book, but the whole story also takes place in their favourite place, which is the ice rink. The whole book is accompanied by wonderful pictures, and the dedication from us, the parents, is just the cherry on top. I warmly recommend it. Not only will all the “heroes of the book” be thrilled, but so will you, as soon as you see the book with your own eyes :)

Our daughter was absolutely thrilled, she looked through it several times in a row and declared that it's pretty, she hasn't had enough of it yet and we read it every day before bedtime.

A great, sweet and inspiring book that won us over from the very first pages! ❤️ The story of Алекс and Марая inspired us to go to the forest together, to enjoy the autumn beauty, to learn more about the animals and their food, to collect pine cones, hazelnuts, acorns and chestnuts and to create a wonderful autumn decoration at home. 🍂🍁 We love books that we don’t just read, but turn into real family adventures! Thank you for this magical experience! 🥰

The book for my grandson’s christening arrived and I’m thrilled with it. I’m already looking forward to us flipping through it together as soon as he grows up a little. It’s great that you can also add a favourite thing or toy and it gets worked into the story. It’s great!!!

Popular questions

No — it is a cover's favourite kind of name. Nine letters set in a big title hold the middle of the artwork beautifully, and every book here is titled around the name itself, in the shape of 'Theodore and …', so the length reads as grandeur rather than clutter.
