A made-to-measure book

One Amelia flew across the Atlantic into the history books — yours is about to land on a cover of her own

Amelia comes with a head start: a royal Gothic root, a place in aviation history and a ready-made home nickname in Millie. Here is why it is a name built for the front of a book.

Why Amelia belongs on a cover

Some names have to grow into a story. Amelia arrives with one already in progress. For nearly a century it has been shorthand for a girl who does the brave thing first and explains afterwards — ever since a pilot named Amelia climbed into a cockpit and flew an ocean nobody thought a woman would cross alone. You don't choose a name for its historical echo, but it is a lovely thing to get for free: put Amelia in a raincoat with a map in her hand on a book cover, and the name does half the storytelling before the first page is turned.

It is also simply a beautiful name to set in type. Amelia opens on a soft A, rolls through the middle and lands on the bright -ia ending that English saves for its most melodic girls' names. On a cover it reads as neither babyish nor stiff — it looks like the name of a heroine you'd want to follow for forty pages. And because the name is loved on both sides of the Atlantic, an Amelia's book travels well: it reads just as naturally to a grandmother in London as to a cousin in Chicago.

And then there is the double life every Amelia leads. At home she is Millie — quick, warm, easy to call across a playground. Amelia is what waits for her on the big occasions: the school register, a card from her grandmother, the spine of a book. A storybook is one of the first places a girl sees her full name treated as something grand, and Amelia rises to that occasion better than almost any name in the alphabet.

Where the name Amelia comes from

Amelia looks Latin and is regularly mistaken for a twin of Emilia, but its root is older and Germanic: amal, a word meaning work, striving and bravery — the same element that named the Amali, a royal dynasty of the Goths. Emilia descends from a Roman family name instead; the two met in the middle ages and have been borrowing each other's glamour ever since, but an Amelia properly carries the meaning of industriousness and courage. For a small girl, 'the one who doesn't give up' is not a bad thing to have hidden in her name.

The name also has genuine royal history in English. Both George II and George III gave it to daughters, and Princess Amelia — the youngest and favourite child of George III — was 'Emily' to her family. Even in a palace, it seems, this name comes with a nickname attached. Henry Fielding borrowed it for a novel as early as 1751, which tells you how long English readers have found Amelia a heroine's name.

Then came the aviator. In 1932 Amelia Earhart became the first woman to fly solo across the Atlantic, and the name has smelled faintly of adventure ever since — half the picture-book pilots and explorer girls of the last few decades owe her their first name. Younger readers meet it somewhere cosier: Amelia Bedelia, the cheerfully literal-minded heroine who has been a fixture of children's bookshelves since 1963. Teachers tend to smile when they read the name out.

All of this shows in the statistics. Amelia was the number-one girls' name in England and Wales for five years running, from 2011 to 2015, and it has sat in the American top ten for over a decade. It is common enough that everyone spells it right on the first try, and storied enough that it never feels like a default. That balance — familiar to every ear, yet nowhere near worn out — is exactly what you want from the name printed largest on a cover.

What an Amelia gets called at home

  • Millie — The everyday favourite, and the one this page assumes — warm, quick and playground-proof. Many families run the two in parallel: Millie for daily life, Amelia for the cover and the register.
  • Mia — The shortest cut, taken from the middle of the name. Popular with siblings who can't yet manage four syllables, and it often sticks precisely because a big brother invented it.
  • Amy — The classic short form of an earlier generation, taken from the front of the name. It gives an Amelia a second, gentler register — the sort of pet name grandparents settle into.
  • Lia — Borrowed from the ending, and the rarest of the four — a good choice for a family that wants a short form nobody else on the street is using.

My daughters love the book! We read it every evening before bedtime. The story is so sweet and lovingly written, and the pictures are beautiful. My girls feel really special because their own name appears in the book. A great keepsake forever! Absolutely recommend. ❤️

We got the book as a birthday present and it turned out perfectly. The print quality pleasantly surprised me – hardcover, nice paper and illustrations printed in fine detail. The characters are drawn so well that my daughter recognized her sister, me, the giraffe and herself :) She really likes the story and now it’s her favourite book, we read it almost every evening. On top of that, it will remain a lovely keepsake that she’ll come back to even in a few years. I definitely recommend it.

An absolutely stunning book made to order. It's not only a beautiful gift, but a keepsake for a lifetime. Our sons are thrilled. Not only did they find “themselves” in the book, but the whole story also takes place in their favourite place, which is the ice rink. The whole book is accompanied by wonderful pictures, and the dedication from us, the parents, is just the cherry on top. I warmly recommend it. Not only will all the “heroes of the book” be thrilled, but so will you, as soon as you see the book with your own eyes :)

Our daughter was absolutely thrilled, she looked through it several times in a row and declared that it's pretty, she hasn't had enough of it yet and we read it every day before bedtime.

A great, sweet and inspiring book that won us over from the very first pages! ❤️ The story of Алекс and Марая inspired us to go to the forest together, to enjoy the autumn beauty, to learn more about the animals and their food, to collect pine cones, hazelnuts, acorns and chestnuts and to create a wonderful autumn decoration at home. 🍂🍁 We love books that we don’t just read, but turn into real family adventures! Thank you for this magical experience! 🥰

The book for my grandson’s christening arrived and I’m thrilled with it. I’m already looking forward to us flipping through it together as soon as he grows up a little. It’s great that you can also add a favourite thing or toy and it gets worked into the story. It’s great!!!

Whichever she actually answers to. The name you enter in the guide is the one used on the cover and throughout the story, so a book for Millie is exactly as possible as a book for Amelia. A popular compromise: the full name on the cover, and Millie in the dedication at the front.
