A made-to-measure book
Elsie: the Scottish pet name that grew into a name of its own
Elsie started life as a fond Scots nickname and ended up on birth certificates in its own right. A storybook lets her hear those two light syllables at every turn of the plot – with her own face on the cover.

Why a book with Elsie's name in it
Elsie is a name that sounds best said out loud. It is short, it ends on a bright "-ee", and it carries a little warmth even when it's called across a playground. That makes it a lovely name to meet on the page: in a story it slots easily into dialogue – "Run, Elsie!", "Elsie, look up!" – without slowing the sentence down, which is exactly what you want when a book is read aloud at bedtime. On a cover it is just as practical: five letters leave plenty of room for the rest of the title, so the name can be set big and bold where she will spot it first.
In this book Elsie isn't a bystander who happens to share her name with the heroine. She is the heroine. Her name is set on the front cover as the first word of the title, and the story is written around her, so the other characters talk to her, wait for her and cheer for her. If she has a little brother, a best friend or a dog who never leaves her side, they can come along on the adventure too.
The four covers on this page show four very different Elsies: one on a football pitch in the evening light, one in a cottage garden with a fistful of flowers, one making friends with a fox, and one in a starry cloak with a wand that glows. They're only samples, but they give a sense of how far one name can travel – from muddy boots to magic.
Where the name Elsie comes from
Elsie began in Scotland as a pet form of Elspeth, the Scots version of Elizabeth. Elizabeth itself goes back to the Hebrew Elisheba, usually translated as "my God is an oath" or "God is abundance". So behind a name that feels light and playful there is a very old, rather solemn root – a nice thing to tell a girl when she asks what her name means.
By the late nineteenth century Elsie had shaken off its role as a nickname and was being given as a first name throughout Britain. Around 1900 it was among the most popular girls' names in England and Wales, the kind of name you find again and again in old school registers and on the backs of family photographs. One well-known bearer from that era is Elsie Inglis, the Edinburgh doctor and suffragist who set up the Scottish Women's Hospitals during the First World War – a fitting namesake for a girl who isn't afraid to take charge. Another is Elsie Widdowson, the British scientist whose work on nutrition shaped wartime rationing – proof that the name has always belonged to clever, determined women as well as to doting grannies.
After that heyday the name went quiet for decades and came to sound like a great-grandmother's name. Then, from the 2000s onwards, it came back strongly, carried by the same wave that brought back other Edwardian names: short, gentle and slightly old-fashioned in a way parents now find charming. Today Elsie is once again a familiar name in British classrooms, and many little Elsies are named after a great-grandmother who wore it first.
The name works the same way in a story as it does in real life: it feels both cosy and spirited. It suits a girl who digs in the garden and a girl who scores goals, which is why it sits so comfortably in very different kinds of adventures.
One small thing parents of an Elsie often notice: because the name is already so short and affectionate, it rarely gets shortened further in everyday life. The name she hears in the story is therefore usually the very same one she hears at the breakfast table, at nursery and from her grandparents – and that familiarity is a big part of why children light up when a character on the page calls her by it. Spellings such as Elsey or Elsy do turn up now and then, but Elsie with "-ie" is by far the usual British form, and it is the one children most often learn to write first.
Nicknames and ways to say Elsie
- Elsie — The everyday form. It is already a pet name by origin, so most families simply use it as it is – in a book it is the form the story uses throughout.
- Els — A quick one-syllable shortening, used by friends, siblings and sports teammates; handy for shouting across a pitch or writing on a lunchbox label.
- Elsie-May, Elsie-Rose — Double-barrelled versions are especially common with Elsie in the UK; some families use the full pairing every day, others only when calling her in for tea.
- Elspeth — The fuller Scots form Elsie grew out of. A few girls are registered as Elspeth and called Elsie at home; others use Elspeth as a grown-up option for later.
- Elsie-bels, Elsie-belle — Rhyming, sing-song pet names used by parents and grandparents for little ones, mostly at bedtime and in silly moments.

My daughters love the book! We read it every evening before bedtime. The story is so sweet and lovingly written, and the pictures are beautiful. My girls feel really special because their own name appears in the book. A great keepsake forever! Absolutely recommend. ❤️
We got the book as a birthday present and it turned out perfectly. The print quality pleasantly surprised me – hardcover, nice paper and illustrations printed in fine detail. The characters are drawn so well that my daughter recognized her sister, me, the giraffe and herself :) She really likes the story and now it’s her favourite book, we read it almost every evening. On top of that, it will remain a lovely keepsake that she’ll come back to even in a few years. I definitely recommend it.
The book was a gift… I’ll find out how happy it makes them… but it’s very beautiful
I have the books ready as a gift, so I’m already looking forward to handing them over
An absolutely stunning book made to order. It's not only a beautiful gift, but a keepsake for a lifetime. Our sons are thrilled. Not only did they find “themselves” in the book, but the whole story also takes place in their favourite place, which is the ice rink. The whole book is accompanied by wonderful pictures, and the dedication from us, the parents, is just the cherry on top. I warmly recommend it. Not only will all the “heroes of the book” be thrilled, but so will you, as soon as you see the book with your own eyes :)
Our daughter was absolutely thrilled, she looked through it several times in a row and declared that it's pretty, she hasn't had enough of it yet and we read it every day before bedtime.
The book is beautiful and my granddaughter is happy with it.
We are satisfied, my little boy really liked the book too. :)
The book and the audiobook are both great. Minor imperfections were willingly and immediately fixed to my satisfaction. I will definitely buy another one, and I have also recommended it to others..
The book is very beautiful, I would have welcomed more pages (for that price), the story is interesting, because my granddaughter loves animals and her cousins, but I have to wait until Christmas for her reaction
I got the book for a birthday and the princess wouldn’t put it down.
The book is very nice. The pictures look very nice, they're not blurry. The book really made us happy.

You choose the name the story uses when you create the hero. Most families type Elsie, but if she is always called Els or Elsie-May at home, you can use that instead.
