A made-to-measure book

A star is said to grace the cover — this is the one book where Grace really does

There's an English verb for lighting up a cover, and it happens to be her name. This is the book where Grace stops being the quiet name in the middle of a birth certificate and becomes the first word of the title.

Here's how a book for Grace could look

Pick a theme, upload a photo, and your child becomes the hero of the story — with their name on the cover and inside.

The covers above are samples — the illustrations were created by artificial intelligence and the children in them aren't real. Your book is made from the photo you upload.

There are names parents invent reasons for, and there are names the English language got to first. Grace is both. When a famous face appears on the front of a magazine, editors reach for one particular verb: she graces the cover. Grace is the rare girl who can take that literally. Her name printed above a title isn't just a label — it's a quiet joke that every adult who picks the book up will get, and that she'll get herself one day, probably around the same time she learns what a pun is.

The cover matters more for Grace than for most names, because Grace so often comes second. For years it has sat among the most common middle names for girls across the English-speaking world — the elegant syllable tucked between a first name and a surname, given by thousands of parents and then hardly ever said out loud. A girl whose Grace comes first deserves to see it treated that way: the first word of the title, the largest word on the page, the name the whole story keeps coming back to.

There's also a small, practical pleasure: Grace is one of the few names that needs no explanation of tone. It's a word for a way of moving, a word said before a meal, a word for unearned kindness — so a title that begins with Grace already sounds like it means something, before the story has even started.

The four covers below show what that looks like. Four different worlds — a dawn path, a cottage garden, a forest meadow, a dusk street — and in every single one, the story belongs to Grace.

Grace goes back to the Latin gratia — favor, kindness, a gift given freely and not because it was earned. The word crossed into English through Old French centuries before anyone used it as a name, which is why it still works as both: you can say grace before dinner, play a grace note on the piano, be given a grace period on your library books.

Long before it was a first name, Greek myth had the three Graces — the Charites, goddesses of charm, beauty and festivity, whom Renaissance painters like Botticelli and Raphael kept returning to. It's part of why the name has never felt stern the way some virtue names do: grace was always the virtue you could dance to.

As a given name, Grace took hold in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries, when Puritan families began naming their daughters after virtues. Most of those names now read like entries in a parish register; Grace is the one that never left. It has spent the past two decades inside the top thirty girls' names in the United States, has repeatedly topped the charts in Ireland, and rode high in the top ten in England and Wales through the 2000s — a four-hundred-year-old name that never had to make a comeback, because it never went away.

The name has been carried well. Grace Hopper was a pioneering computer scientist and US Navy rear admiral who helped invent the compiler — modern programming stands on her work. Grace Kelly won an Oscar and then became an actual princess, which remains the most on-brand career move any Grace has made. And in 1838, Grace Darling, a lighthouse keeper's twenty-two-year-old daughter, rowed into a North Sea storm to rescue survivors of a wrecked steamship and became a national heroine. Scientist, princess, rescuer — a decent range of role models for one syllable.

The name even has its own soundtrack. "Amazing Grace", written in 1772, has been recorded thousands of times — by gospel choirs, folk singers and bagpipers — which makes Grace one of the very few names an entire congregation can sing.

And it is just one syllable: a soft landing that starts with a gentle gr- and closes on a hush. In a story read at bedtime that matters — Grace never trips the tongue, rhymes gently with place, space and embrace, the vocabulary of adventure endings, and lands as softly at the end of a chapter as it does at the end of a day.

  • Gracie — The kitchen-table form: what she's called when dinner is ready or a scraped knee needs kissing. Warmer and bouncier than the full name, and for many girls it's simply who they are until school starts. If she's Gracie at home, the story can call her Gracie too.
  • Gray / Grae — The cool short form some Graces adopt around the classroom years — quick to shout across a playground and a little tomboyish, which rather suits a girl in a superhero cape. It also gives her a ready-made grown-up signature for later.
  • Gigi — The toddler-era doubling, and often the version a younger sibling manages first. It tends to survive as a private family name long after everyone else has gone back to the full form.
  • Grace — The full form is only one syllable, so plenty of families never shorten it at all. It's also the version teachers, certificates and — someday — book covers use.

My daughters love the book! We read it every evening before bedtime. The story is so sweet and lovingly written, and the pictures are beautiful. My girls feel really special because their own name appears in the book. A great keepsake forever! Absolutely recommend. ❤️

We got the book as a birthday present and it turned out perfectly. The print quality pleasantly surprised me – hardcover, nice paper and illustrations printed in fine detail. The characters are drawn so well that my daughter recognized her sister, me, the giraffe and herself :) She really likes the story and now it’s her favourite book, we read it almost every evening. On top of that, it will remain a lovely keepsake that she’ll come back to even in a few years. I definitely recommend it.

An absolutely stunning book made to order. It's not only a beautiful gift, but a keepsake for a lifetime. Our sons are thrilled. Not only did they find “themselves” in the book, but the whole story also takes place in their favourite place, which is the ice rink. The whole book is accompanied by wonderful pictures, and the dedication from us, the parents, is just the cherry on top. I warmly recommend it. Not only will all the “heroes of the book” be thrilled, but so will you, as soon as you see the book with your own eyes :)

Our daughter was absolutely thrilled, she looked through it several times in a row and declared that it's pretty, she hasn't had enough of it yet and we read it every day before bedtime.

A great, sweet and inspiring book that won us over from the very first pages! ❤️ The story of Алекс and Марая inspired us to go to the forest together, to enjoy the autumn beauty, to learn more about the animals and their food, to collect pine cones, hazelnuts, acorns and chestnuts and to create a wonderful autumn decoration at home. 🍂🍁 We love books that we don’t just read, but turn into real family adventures! Thank you for this magical experience! 🥰

The book for my grandson’s christening arrived and I’m thrilled with it. I’m already looking forward to us flipping through it together as soon as he grows up a little. It’s great that you can also add a favourite thing or toy and it gets worked into the story. It’s great!!!
