A made-to-measure book
Hazel: the tree, the colour, and the girl on the cover
Hazel is one of the few names that is also a living English word — a tree, a warm brown-green colour, a whole autumn mood folded into two syllables. That gives a storybook about Hazel something most personalized books never get: a name that carries its own imagery before the story even starts.

Here's how a book for Hazel could look
Pick a theme, upload a photo, and your child becomes the hero of the story — with their name on the cover and inside.
The covers above are samples — the illustrations were created by artificial intelligence and the children in them aren't real. Your book is made from the photo you upload.
Why Hazel belongs on a book cover
Some names you have to explain; Hazel you can point to. It is a word children may already know from hazelnuts on the kitchen table or from someone's hazel eyes, so when it appears on a book cover, it doesn't read like a label — it reads like the first line of the story. Five letters print large and clean above an illustration, and the shape of the word, with that tall H at the front and the l at the end, frames it like a little arch.
The sound does the rest. Hazel is two syllables with the stress up front — HAY-zel — opening wide and then landing on the same soft "-el" ending that English storybook heroines have carried for generations. The z in the middle is rare in girls' names and gives it a slight buzz of mischief; a Hazel in a story can be dreamy on one page and climbing a fence on the next, and the name keeps up with both.
And because hazel is a real word, a writer gets images with it for free: a hazel grove at the edge of the village, a pocketful of hazelnuts for the journey, eyes the colour of the name itself. Those are threads a story can pick up naturally — they belong to Hazel and to almost no other name.
There is one more quiet, practical gift: Hazel needs no explaining and no spelling out. Teachers, grandparents and party invitations all get it right on the first try, because the word is already in everyone's vocabulary — yet as a first name it is still uncommon enough in most classrooms that a book with Hazel on the cover feels like it could only belong to one particular girl.
Where the name Hazel comes from
Hazel comes from the Old English word hæsel, the name of the hazel tree — so unlike names that were imported and reshaped over centuries, this one grew straight out of the English landscape. It joined the great Victorian wave of nature names, when girls were named Ivy, Violet, Olive and Hazel after the gardens and hedgerows around them, and by around 1900 it was one of the most popular girls' names in the English-speaking world.
Then it faded, the way vintage names do — and came back the way the best of them do. Hazel returned to the American charts in the late 1990s and has climbed steadily since, reaching the top thirty girls' names in the United States in the 2020s, with a similar revival in Britain and Australia. Famous parents played their part — Julia Roberts chose Hazel for her daughter in 2004, Emily Blunt and John Krasinski followed a decade later — and a new generation met the name in beloved places: Hazel is the brave, clear-eyed heroine of The Fault in Our Stars, and, a lovely piece of trivia for bedtime, the wise rabbit leader in Watership Down is called Hazel too.
The word has deeper roots in stories still. Shakespeare teased about hazel eyes in Romeo and Juliet, and hazel wood is the classic material of wands and divining rods — the branch people once trusted to find hidden water. In Celtic legend, hazelnuts were nuts of wisdom: the salmon of knowledge gained all the world's learning by eating nine of them, and whoever ate the salmon inherited it. A name that folklore links to wisdom and finding hidden things, a word that names a colour, and a tree that feeds squirrels through the winter — that is a lot of story packed into one little girl's name.
Nicknames and pet names for Hazel
- Haze — The natural short form — quick and a little cool, the version friends shout across a playground.
- Hazy — The soft, sleepy variant for home: a toddler nickname that tends to survive into bedtime stories long after.
- Zel — Built from the name's unusual middle, so it feels like a secret code — a nickname almost nobody outside the family guesses.
- Zellie — The playful, dressed-up version of Zel, for days when a plain nickname isn't ceremonial enough.
- Hazelnut — The inevitable family joke that becomes an endearment — affectionate, edible, and impossible to resist for grandparents.

My daughters love the book! We read it every evening before bedtime. The story is so sweet and lovingly written, and the pictures are beautiful. My girls feel really special because their own name appears in the book. A great keepsake forever! Absolutely recommend. ❤️
We got the book as a birthday present and it turned out perfectly. The print quality pleasantly surprised me – hardcover, nice paper and illustrations printed in fine detail. The characters are drawn so well that my daughter recognized her sister, me, the giraffe and herself :) She really likes the story and now it’s her favourite book, we read it almost every evening. On top of that, it will remain a lovely keepsake that she’ll come back to even in a few years. I definitely recommend it.
The book was a gift… I’ll find out how happy it makes them… but it’s very beautiful
I have the books ready as a gift, so I’m already looking forward to handing them over
An absolutely stunning book made to order. It's not only a beautiful gift, but a keepsake for a lifetime. Our sons are thrilled. Not only did they find “themselves” in the book, but the whole story also takes place in their favourite place, which is the ice rink. The whole book is accompanied by wonderful pictures, and the dedication from us, the parents, is just the cherry on top. I warmly recommend it. Not only will all the “heroes of the book” be thrilled, but so will you, as soon as you see the book with your own eyes :)
Our daughter was absolutely thrilled, she looked through it several times in a row and declared that it's pretty, she hasn't had enough of it yet and we read it every day before bedtime.
The book is very nice. The pictures look very nice, they're not blurry. The book really made us happy.
Very beautiful book, I always have trouble choosing in a bookshop, something bothers me about every one, or I can't find a theme I'd want.. here I can make up anything
A great, sweet and inspiring book that won us over from the very first pages! ❤️ The story of Алекс and Марая inspired us to go to the forest together, to enjoy the autumn beauty, to learn more about the animals and their food, to collect pine cones, hazelnuts, acorns and chestnuts and to create a wonderful autumn decoration at home. 🍂🍁 We love books that we don’t just read, but turn into real family adventures! Thank you for this magical experience! 🥰
The book is just as I imagined it. It's a present for under the Christmas tree, so we'll see how the grandkids like it ♥
The book for my grandson’s christening arrived and I’m thrilled with it. I’m already looking forward to us flipping through it together as soon as he grows up a little. It’s great that you can also add a favourite thing or toy and it gets worked into the story. It’s great!!!
The book is very nice, it was bought as a gift, so Maťko hasn’t seen it yet

Hazel comes from the Old English hæsel and simply means the hazel tree. Because the tree gave its name to a colour as well, Hazel also carries the sense of that warm brown-green shade — most familiar from hazel eyes.
