A made-to-measure book

When Evelyn Waugh married Evelyn Gardner, their friends had to invent He-Evelyn and She-Evelyn to keep them apart — on this cover, no one will ever have to ask which Evelyn it is

A century ago one London household held the name twice over. Today Evelyn — Evie, the moment she's home — gets a storybook in which the name on the cover means exactly one girl: yours.

Two registers, one girl

Evelyn is a name with two registers, and a book happens to need both. The cover is a formal occasion: the title is typeset from the full name, and Evelyn — a name that has signed diaries, novels and bank letterheads — carries a hardcover title page effortlessly. The story inside is a bedtime occasion, and that is where Evie lives: the name called up the stairs, the one she answers to with her eyes already closing. Most of childhood runs on the short form, so a book of her own is one of the rare objects that gets to bring out the Sunday version — and few names reward the outing like Evelyn does.

There is a quieter reason the name suits a book of her own. Evelyn is that rare name a girl can share with a great-grandmother and a classmate at the same time — it has a century of bearers behind it and a playground full of them ahead. Between the two stands one particular Evelyn, and that is the whole point of a book like this: the title is not about the name's history, it is about the girl holding the flashlight under the blanket. It also simply sets well in print — Evelyn opens on a tall capital E and leads every one of the cover titles below, the way a heroine's name should. When she reads it on the spine, the full, formal, three-generation version, the book says something no borrowed story can: this one was written about you.

Where Evelyn comes from

Evelyn began life as a surname. It grew out of Aveline, a name the Normans carried across the Channel in 1066 — itself an affectionate double diminutive built on the ancient Germanic Ava, from a root usually read as "wished for" or "longed for". A wished-for child: as name meanings go, it is hard to do better, and it is a fine thing to be able to tell a daughter when she asks what her name means.

The surname's most famous bearer was John Evelyn, the seventeenth-century diarist, and when English families later took to turning surnames back into first names, Evelyn crossed over — for both boys and girls. For a stretch of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries Britain handed it out in both directions: the novelist Evelyn Waugh and the financier Evelyn de Rothschild both carried it, and Waugh's first wife was born Evelyn Gardner, which is how literary London came to know the married couple it nicknamed He-Evelyn and She-Evelyn. America never had much patience for the ambiguity — there the name belonged to girls almost from the start, riding high in the 1910s and 1920s, resting through the middle of the century with the grandmother generation, then climbing back to the very top of the charts in the 2010s. That arc, beloved twice a century apart, is why Evelyn manages to sound vintage and current in the same breath.

Say it however your family says it: America goes EV-uh-lin, while older British usage clips it to EEV-lin. A printed book never has to choose — the name on the page belongs to whoever is reading it aloud.

What Evelyn gets called at home

  • Evie — The default, and for many parents half the reason to choose Evelyn in the first place: the stately name goes on the certificate, and this warm, quick one runs the household. It is the form for calling up staircases, labelling lunchboxes and ending arguments gently — some Evelyns go a whole school year without hearing the long version out loud.
  • Eve — A trim from the front rather than the middle, quieter and more grown-up than Evie. It tends to arrive later — around the age an Evelyn decides that Evie sounds little — and some keep both, one for home and one for everyone else.
  • Ev — The single-syllable economy version: sibling shorthand, shouted across gardens and swimming pools. Nobody chooses it; it simply happens, usually within a week of a little brother learning to talk.
  • Lynnie — Taken from the tail of the name instead of the head, which almost nobody expects. It is a grandparent's form more than a playground one — and all the more precious for being rare.
  • Evelina — Not a shortening but a stretch: the ornate cousin from the same Aveline root, the title of Fanny Burney's famous novel. No one uses it daily, but it makes a fine mock-formal address for solemn occasions like losing a tooth.

My daughters love the book! We read it every evening before bedtime. The story is so sweet and lovingly written, and the pictures are beautiful. My girls feel really special because their own name appears in the book. A great keepsake forever! Absolutely recommend. ❤️

We got the book as a birthday present and it turned out perfectly. The print quality pleasantly surprised me – hardcover, nice paper and illustrations printed in fine detail. The characters are drawn so well that my daughter recognized her sister, me, the giraffe and herself :) She really likes the story and now it’s her favourite book, we read it almost every evening. On top of that, it will remain a lovely keepsake that she’ll come back to even in a few years. I definitely recommend it.

An absolutely stunning book made to order. It's not only a beautiful gift, but a keepsake for a lifetime. Our sons are thrilled. Not only did they find “themselves” in the book, but the whole story also takes place in their favourite place, which is the ice rink. The whole book is accompanied by wonderful pictures, and the dedication from us, the parents, is just the cherry on top. I warmly recommend it. Not only will all the “heroes of the book” be thrilled, but so will you, as soon as you see the book with your own eyes :)

Our daughter was absolutely thrilled, she looked through it several times in a row and declared that it's pretty, she hasn't had enough of it yet and we read it every day before bedtime.

A great, sweet and inspiring book that won us over from the very first pages! ❤️ The story of Алекс and Марая inspired us to go to the forest together, to enjoy the autumn beauty, to learn more about the animals and their food, to collect pine cones, hazelnuts, acorns and chestnuts and to create a wonderful autumn decoration at home. 🍂🍁 We love books that we don’t just read, but turn into real family adventures! Thank you for this magical experience! 🥰

The book for my grandson’s christening arrived and I’m thrilled with it. I’m already looking forward to us flipping through it together as soon as he grows up a little. It’s great that you can also add a favourite thing or toy and it gets worked into the story. It’s great!!!

Whichever she answers to at bedtime. You type the name yourself, so the story can star either form. Many families choose the full Evelyn precisely because a book cover is one of the few places in childhood where the formal version gets to shine.
