A made-to-measure book

For a century, films have ended on the word 'Fin' — Finn is the name this story begins with

One bright syllable that legends, sagas and screenwriters have been passing down for a thousand years — and it is about to get its newest hero. In this book, Finn's name is on the cover, his face is in the illustrations, and the whole story happens to him.

Here's how a book for Finn could look

Pick a theme, upload a photo, and your child becomes the hero of the story — with their name on the cover and inside.

The covers above are samples — the illustrations were created by artificial intelligence and the children in them aren't real. Your book is made from the photo you upload.

Why this name belongs on a cover

Some names have to be shortened before they fit a book cover. Finn arrives ready. Four letters, one crisp syllable, a double N that closes like a drumbeat — set in large type over a canyon or a night sky, it reads from across the room. And it behaves just as well inside the story: a bedtime reader never stumbles over Finn, and when the hero has to be called back from the edge of an adventure, that final -nn is made to be stretched out — 'Fiiinn!' — exactly the way it is called across real gardens every evening.

There is also something a picture book quietly borrows from the name itself. Finn has belonged to storytelling for the better part of a thousand years — to an Irish legend, to Viking sagas, to river rafts and animated adventures — so a boy who finds Finn printed on a cover is not trying the name on for the first time; he is joining a long line of heroes who wore it before him. The difference is that this time the hero does not just share the name. He has Finn's face, drawn from one photograph into every illustration, Finn's own family and friends beside him, and a plot chosen — or invented — for him alone. The name has been in stories for centuries; this is the one written back at him.

Where Finn comes from and what it means

Finn is the anglicised form of the Irish Fionn, and it means 'fair', 'white' or 'bright'. The name's first famous owner set the bar absurdly high: Fionn mac Cumhaill, the great hunter-warrior of Irish legend and leader of the Fianna. As a boy, the story goes, he was cooking the Salmon of Knowledge for his master, burnt his thumb on its skin, put the thumb in his mouth — and swallowed all the wisdom in the world along with it. Irish tradition also credits him with building the Giant's Causeway, the tens of thousands of basalt columns still standing on the Antrim coast. Not many four-letter names come with their own geology.

The Norse were fond of it too: Finnr appears as a personal name throughout the old sagas, carried across the North Sea by Vikings — which is partly why the name feels equally at home in Dublin, Oslo and Hamburg today.

For most of the twentieth century, English-speaking parents left Finn to the legends. Then, around the turn of the millennium, it appeared on the charts — and it has climbed ever since. In Germany and the Netherlands, Finn has spent recent years among the most popular boys' names in the whole country; in Ireland, Britain, America and Australia it has moved from rare to firmly beloved. Writers never needed convincing: Mark Twain gave the name to the most famous boy on the Mississippi, and screenwriters have been reaching for it ever since, from animated adventurers to a Star Wars hero. A boy named Finn today shares his name with legends — but only rarely with a classmate.

What Finn gets called at home

  • Finn — The everyday name and the Sunday-best name in one. Plenty of names save a short form for the playground; Finn is both at once — which is why it is the form that belongs on the cover and in every line of the story.
  • Finny — The toddler-years form, mostly a parents' privilege — said over a cot, a grazed knee or a bowl of porridge. Most boys grow out of it by school age; most parents never quite do.
  • Fin — The name pared down to its last three letters — how siblings shout it up the stairs and how his friends will one day text it. It loses a letter and keeps all of the sound.
  • Fionn — The original Irish spelling, pronounced exactly the same. Families who chose it in honour of the legend should enter it exactly so — the book prints the name letter for letter, just as you type it.
  • Finn as the short form — For boys formally named Finnegan, Finley, Fintan or Phineas, Finn is the form that actually gets used at the dinner table. If that is your Finn, put Finn in the book — a hero should be called what he answers to.

My daughters love the book! We read it every evening before bedtime. The story is so sweet and lovingly written, and the pictures are beautiful. My girls feel really special because their own name appears in the book. A great keepsake forever! Absolutely recommend. ❤️

We got the book as a birthday present and it turned out perfectly. The print quality pleasantly surprised me – hardcover, nice paper and illustrations printed in fine detail. The characters are drawn so well that my daughter recognized her sister, me, the giraffe and herself :) She really likes the story and now it’s her favourite book, we read it almost every evening. On top of that, it will remain a lovely keepsake that she’ll come back to even in a few years. I definitely recommend it.

An absolutely stunning book made to order. It's not only a beautiful gift, but a keepsake for a lifetime. Our sons are thrilled. Not only did they find “themselves” in the book, but the whole story also takes place in their favourite place, which is the ice rink. The whole book is accompanied by wonderful pictures, and the dedication from us, the parents, is just the cherry on top. I warmly recommend it. Not only will all the “heroes of the book” be thrilled, but so will you, as soon as you see the book with your own eyes :)

Our daughter was absolutely thrilled, she looked through it several times in a row and declared that it's pretty, she hasn't had enough of it yet and we read it every day before bedtime.

A great, sweet and inspiring book that won us over from the very first pages! ❤️ The story of Алекс and Марая inspired us to go to the forest together, to enjoy the autumn beauty, to learn more about the animals and their food, to collect pine cones, hazelnuts, acorns and chestnuts and to create a wonderful autumn decoration at home. 🍂🍁 We love books that we don’t just read, but turn into real family adventures! Thank you for this magical experience! 🥰

The book for my grandson’s christening arrived and I’m thrilled with it. I’m already looking forward to us flipping through it together as soon as he grows up a little. It’s great that you can also add a favourite thing or toy and it gets worked into the story. It’s great!!!

Both, comfortably. Finn stands on its own on birth certificates across Ireland, Germany, the Netherlands and the English-speaking world — and it also serves as the everyday form of longer names such as Finnegan or Finley. For the book, the only rule that matters is what he is actually called: the name you enter is the name the hero carries.
