A made-to-measure book

Emma has been a book title since 1815 — this one will be about your Emma

Some names have to earn their place on a cover. Emma has held one for two centuries — and the next book with her name in the title can be about the Emma who lives at your house, with her face in the illustrations and her adventures between the covers.

Here's how a book for Emma could look

Pick a theme, upload a photo, and your child becomes the hero of the story — with their name on the cover and inside.

The covers above are samples — the illustrations were created by artificial intelligence and the children in them aren't real. Your book is made from the photo you upload.

Why a cover was practically designed for Emma

Emma is one of the few names a big title font can't overpower. Four letters, and the same four whether you read them left to right or right to left — Emma is a palindrome, one of the very few among the world's most-loved girls' names. That symmetry is why it sits so confidently at the top of a cover: short enough to print large, balanced enough to need no subtitle propping it up.

It behaves just as well inside a story. Emma is the version the narrator uses when something important is about to happen; Emmy is what gets called across the playground when it's time to come home. A book that is really hers can hold both — the ceremonial Emma of chapter openings and the everyday Emmy of the dialogue — and switch between them exactly the way her own family does.

Read aloud, the name is two soft, open syllables that a child learning her letters can spot on a page long before she can read the sentence around them. And there's a quieter advantage too: Emma is written the same way in English, German, French, Spanish, Italian, Dutch and the Scandinavian languages alike. Grandparents who read to her in another language will find the same four letters on the cover that she knows from her coat peg. Not many names travel that lightly.

Where Emma comes from — and why it never really left

Emma began more than a thousand years ago as a Germanic name, grown from the element irmin, meaning "whole" or "universal". It started life as a friendly short form of longer Germanic names built on that element, and then did what the best short forms do: outlived every one of them.

Its first great bearer was Emma of Normandy, who in the eleventh century was crowned queen of England twice, alongside two different kings, and remained one of the most influential women in Europe for half a century. Eight hundred years later, Jane Austen paid the name the ultimate literary compliment: her 1815 novel needed no title beyond Emma, making it one of the few first names in English literature to carry a classic entirely on its own.

The modern chapter is just as remarkable. After a quiet spell in the mid-twentieth century, Emma came back with force — when Rachel named her baby Emma in front of tens of millions of Friends viewers in 2002, the name was already climbing, and it went on to spend five consecutive years as the most popular girls' name in the United States in the 2010s. It stands at or near the top of the charts from France to Norway to Germany today. Millions of parents keep arriving, independently, at the same conclusion: a name meaning "whole" really is complete in itself — nothing to add, nothing to trim away.

Emmy, Em and the other names Emma answers to

  • Emmy — The everyday form and the one most Emmas hear first — from parents, grandparents and anyone who has watched her run before she could walk. Warm, quick to call out, and the natural choice if you want the book to sound the way home sounds.
  • Em — The single-syllable version that tends to arrive with school, from teammates and best friends. It's the shorthand of people who don't need the whole name to know exactly who they mean.
  • Emmie — The same sound as Emmy with a softer look on paper — the spelling that turns up in birthday cards and bedtime whispers. Some families use it while she's little and let it grow back into Emma later.

My daughters love the book! We read it every evening before bedtime. The story is so sweet and lovingly written, and the pictures are beautiful. My girls feel really special because their own name appears in the book. A great keepsake forever! Absolutely recommend. ❤️

We got the book as a birthday present and it turned out perfectly. The print quality pleasantly surprised me – hardcover, nice paper and illustrations printed in fine detail. The characters are drawn so well that my daughter recognized her sister, me, the giraffe and herself :) She really likes the story and now it’s her favourite book, we read it almost every evening. On top of that, it will remain a lovely keepsake that she’ll come back to even in a few years. I definitely recommend it.

The book was a gift… I’ll find out how happy it makes them… but it’s very beautiful

An absolutely stunning book made to order. It's not only a beautiful gift, but a keepsake for a lifetime. Our sons are thrilled. Not only did they find “themselves” in the book, but the whole story also takes place in their favourite place, which is the ice rink. The whole book is accompanied by wonderful pictures, and the dedication from us, the parents, is just the cherry on top. I warmly recommend it. Not only will all the “heroes of the book” be thrilled, but so will you, as soon as you see the book with your own eyes :)

Our daughter was absolutely thrilled, she looked through it several times in a row and declared that it's pretty, she hasn't had enough of it yet and we read it every day before bedtime.

Very beautiful book, I always have trouble choosing in a bookshop, something bothers me about every one, or I can't find a theme I'd want.. here I can make up anything

A great, sweet and inspiring book that won us over from the very first pages! ❤️ The story of Алекс and Марая inspired us to go to the forest together, to enjoy the autumn beauty, to learn more about the animals and their food, to collect pine cones, hazelnuts, acorns and chestnuts and to create a wonderful autumn decoration at home. 🍂🍁 We love books that we don’t just read, but turn into real family adventures! Thank you for this magical experience! 🥰

The book is just as I imagined it. It's a present for under the Christmas tree, so we'll see how the grandkids like it ♥

The book for my grandson’s christening arrived and I’m thrilled with it. I’m already looking forward to us flipping through it together as soon as he grows up a little. It’s great that you can also add a favourite thing or toy and it gets worked into the story. It’s great!!!

Popular questions

Popularity is exactly why personalization matters. There may be another Emma in her class, but there is no other book in which the Emma on the cover has her face — the illustrations are created from a photo you upload, and the plot is one you pick or write yourself. The name is shared; the book isn't.
