A made-to-measure book
Willow: named for the tree that bends in the wind and never breaks
Willow is a name you can see from a riverbank: soft, green and quietly strong. A storybook with Willow on the cover lets her step out from under those branches and into an adventure that is entirely hers.

Why Willow belongs on a book cover
Some names sit flat on a page. Willow moves. Two soft syllables, a gentle double L, and an ending that trails off like a breeze through leaves – read aloud at bedtime, it sounds almost like the start of a lullaby. That makes it a lovely name to hear again and again as a story unfolds, whether she is creeping through a misty valley or marching down her own street in a homemade cape.
It also carries a picture with it. Most children named Willow grow up being told about the tree: how it leans over water, how its long branches sway without snapping, how it is one of the first to turn green in spring. A story where Willow is the hero gives that picture a plot. She can be the girl who bends when the wind gets rough, then stands back up and carries on – which is exactly the kind of heroine a six-year-old likes to recognise in the mirror.
And because the name is a real English word, it slips into a title beautifully. "Willow and the Map to Misty Valley" reads like something you would find on a library shelf, not like a name that has been pasted onto a cover.
There is a practical side too. Willow has no tricky spelling and no awkward possessive – "Willow's rocket", "Willow's map" – so it reads smoothly on every page, and young readers who are just starting to sound out words can usually spot their own name long before they can read the rest of the sentence. For a girl learning her letters, seeing that W at the top of a page is a small thrill all of its own.
Where the name Willow comes from
Willow comes straight from the tree. The word goes back to Old English welig, and the trees themselves – the genus Salix – have grown along British rivers and streams for as long as anyone has been naming things. For centuries it was simply a word for a tree, a basket material and the wood of a cricket bat (English cricket bats are still made from a particular white willow). Only in the twentieth century did parents start using it as a girl's name.
The tree has collected plenty of meaning along the way. Willow bark was used for pain and fever long before chemists drew salicylic acid from it, the forerunner of aspirin. The weeping willow became a symbol of grief in Victorian art, while the pussy willow, with its furry silver catkins, has always been a cheerful sign that winter is ending. Kenneth Grahame's The Wind in the Willows gave the trees a permanent place in British childhood, and the blue-and-white Willow pattern china still sits in countless kitchen dressers.
As a first name, Willow took off from the late 1990s onwards – helped along by the gentle witch in Buffy the Vampire Slayer – and nature names in general have been climbing ever since. Today Willow sits comfortably among the popular girls' names in England and Wales, familiar enough that no one asks you to spell it, yet still fresh enough that she probably won't share it with three classmates.
A lovely moment for a Willow book is early spring, when the riverside willows are the first trees to turn a pale, hazy green and the catkins come out. Some families make a little ritual of it: a walk to the nearest willow, a photo under the branches each year, and a story to read when they get home.
In folklore the willow has a double reputation. It is said to grow where water is near, so in old country lore a willow meant a spring or stream was close by, and travellers trusted it. Willow wood was woven into cradles and baskets, and wands of willow were thought to carry a bit of quiet magic. All of that gives a Willow story plenty to play with: a girl who always finds her way back to water, who can weave a plan out of very little, and who sways rather than snaps when things go wrong.
What people call Willow
- Willow — The full name is already soft and short, so most families simply use it as it is – at home, at school and on the cover of a book.
- Wills — A playful, slightly sporty version that siblings and friends tend to land on, especially once she starts school.
- Will — A brisk, tomboyish short form that some girls choose for themselves; it suits a heroine who climbs garden walls.
- Lolo or Lo — Built from the second syllable; a favourite with toddlers who can't quite manage the W yet, and it often sticks.
- Willa — An affectionate twist used by grandparents and close family, a little old-fashioned and very sweet.
- Willow Tree — A teasing family nickname, usually saved for when she has grown another inch or is swaying around the kitchen.
- Willow-wisp — A whimsical pet name some parents borrow from will-o'-the-wisp, perfect for a little girl who flits from room to room and is gone before you turn around.

My daughters love the book! We read it every evening before bedtime. The story is so sweet and lovingly written, and the pictures are beautiful. My girls feel really special because their own name appears in the book. A great keepsake forever! Absolutely recommend. ❤️
We got the book as a birthday present and it turned out perfectly. The print quality pleasantly surprised me – hardcover, nice paper and illustrations printed in fine detail. The characters are drawn so well that my daughter recognized her sister, me, the giraffe and herself :) She really likes the story and now it’s her favourite book, we read it almost every evening. On top of that, it will remain a lovely keepsake that she’ll come back to even in a few years. I definitely recommend it.
The book was a gift… I’ll find out how happy it makes them… but it’s very beautiful
I have the books ready as a gift, so I’m already looking forward to handing them over
An absolutely stunning book made to order. It's not only a beautiful gift, but a keepsake for a lifetime. Our sons are thrilled. Not only did they find “themselves” in the book, but the whole story also takes place in their favourite place, which is the ice rink. The whole book is accompanied by wonderful pictures, and the dedication from us, the parents, is just the cherry on top. I warmly recommend it. Not only will all the “heroes of the book” be thrilled, but so will you, as soon as you see the book with your own eyes :)
Our daughter was absolutely thrilled, she looked through it several times in a row and declared that it's pretty, she hasn't had enough of it yet and we read it every day before bedtime.
The book is beautiful and my granddaughter is happy with it.
We are satisfied, my little boy really liked the book too. :)
The book and the audiobook are both great. Minor imperfections were willingly and immediately fixed to my satisfaction. I will definitely buy another one, and I have also recommended it to others..
The book is very beautiful, I would have welcomed more pages (for that price), the story is interesting, because my granddaughter loves animals and her cousins, but I have to wait until Christmas for her reaction
I got the book for a birthday and the princess wouldn’t put it down.
The book is very nice. The pictures look very nice, they're not blurry. The book really made us happy.

Yes. The story is written for her from the start, so Willow is the name the other characters call out, the name in the dedication and the name on the cover – not a blank space filled in afterwards.
