How much a personalized book costs and what's included

Personalized book pricing, item by item: what the digital book includes, what print and shipping cost, what's extra and where to save.

How much a personalized book costs and what's included
Quick answer

A personalized digital book costs $7.99 — that covers the whole story, every illustration, a downloadable PDF and the online reader. The hardcover edition is $32.99, plus $5.99 for shipping. The audiobook is an optional extra at $3.99. These are one-off payments: no subscription and no fee for downloading again.

What each price covers

Print isn't ordered instead of the digital book, but on top of it: first the book is created, you read it through and fine-tune it, and only then do you send the finished book to print. That's why the prices add up rather than being alternatives.

ItemPriceWhat's included
Digital book$7.99A story made to measure, 12 illustrated spreads, a cover with the child's name, a dedication page, PDF and online reader, 3 illustration redraws
Audiobook$3.99The whole story read aloud in a voice of your choice, listening in the reader, a QR code in the printed book
Printed book$32.99A4 portrait format, hardcover, heavy coated paper, full-colour printing
Shipping$5.99Delivery to any address you choose, with parcel tracking
Extra redraws$0.39 eachOnly once the 3 included redraws are used up

Included in the price, even where others charge extra

The things people ask about most, because they're used to seeing them as add-ons.

  • Every illustration
You don't pay per page or per character. The price covers the whole book — 12 illustrated spreads, the cover and the dedication page — however many heroes you put in it.
  • Unlimited text edits
Once the book is generated, you can rewrite any text in it and the PDF re-typesets itself. It isn't a paid “revision”, just normal work on a finished book.
  • Illustration redraws
3 redraws are included, and the editor shows how many you have left. Each new version is saved as a variant, so you can always go back to the original — a failed attempt costs you nothing.
  • PDF and repeat downloads
The book stays in your account and can be downloaded again at any time. Repeat downloads and access to the reader are free.
  • Language and illustration style
Choosing from 30 languages and 20 illustration styles is part of the order, not a premium upgrade.

What costs extra

Shipping is added to print and is charged per parcel, not per copy — a second copy in the same parcel doesn't double it. The audiobook is an add-on: you can add it straight to your order or at any time later in your account, at the same price.

Illustration redraws only cost extra once you've used up the ones included — after that they're $0.39 each and can be bought in the editor, from one to twenty at a time. In practice, most books are finished without paying anything extra: suspect illustrations are checked and redrawn automatically before you even see the book.

What you never pay for: storing the book, downloading the PDF again, rewriting texts or editing the dedication.

Three typical orders and what you pay for

Real cases show best which items add up and which never appear at all. None of this is a bundle — every item can be ordered on its own.

A book to read on a tablet
You pay only for the digital book at $7.99. No shipping, no waiting for a parcel — the book is in your account within 15 minutes. It's the cheapest way to find out whether your child loves the book before you order a print.
A book as a Christmas present
The digital book at $7.99, printing at $32.99 and shipping at $5.99 add up. The digital version stays part of it — it's where you correct the texts before sending to print, and after printing it remains in your account to download.
A book your child can listen to as well
Add the audio to the digital book for $3.99. A QR code in the printed book leads to it, so your child can listen without a tablet in hand. You can also buy the audio later at the same price, so there's no need to decide right away.

What doesn't affect the price

The price of the digital book is a single figure, however ambitious your brief. More heroes don't make it dearer — siblings, parents and the dog in one book cost the same as one child. Neither does the choice of language or illustration style, even though some styles take more work than others.

The length of the dedication, the number of text edits and how many times you download the book make no difference either. That's deliberate: while you're putting the book together, there should be no reason to skimp on the things that make it a book for your child.

The only two things that really move the price are a physical parcel (print and shipping) and illustration redraws beyond the ones included.

Why a personalized book costs more than one off the shelf

With an ordinary book from a bookshop, the cost of the text and illustrations is spread across the whole print run — ten thousand copies share one illustrator's work. With a personalized book nothing gets spread: the story is written for one child, and every illustration is made once, for one book, and never used again.

The second difference is printing. A personalized book is printed as a single copy to order, not in a print run — no warehouse and no risk of half a pallet left over, but no volume discount either.

That's why offers can't be compared on the price tag alone. Compare what's included: whether the text and illustrations are created after you order, how many edits are free, and whether print and shipping are part of the price or on top of it. How to tell a name simply printed into a stock book from real personalization is explained in our introduction to personalized books.

How to pay less

None of these is a trick — they're options that really are there at checkout, people just often don't know about them.

  1. 1
Buy several books with a family bundle
Gift vouchers are also sold in bundles for several books, and each book then works out cheaper than buying them one at a time. Handy if you know you'll be buying more presents within the year — the gift voucher is valid for a year.
  2. 2
Ship the book straight to the recipient
When you order the print, you can enter any delivery address. It saves forwarding and a second parcel when the present is going to Grandma anyway.
  3. 3
    Review your printed book
An approved review with a photo earns you a coupon for a free audiobook with your next book; a review with a video earns a discount on your next digital book. The coupon has a limited validity, so it only makes sense if you really are planning another book.
  4. 4
    Add the audio later
The audiobook can be added at any time at the same price. If you're not sure your child will use it, there's no need to decide at checkout.

How to pay

You can pay by card or phone through a secure payment gateway — your card details never reach us — or by bank transfer, in which case you'll get the payment details and a payment reference after you order.

With a transfer, one thing is worth knowing: the book only starts generating once the money arrives. An instant payment lands within minutes, even in the evening or at the weekend; a standard transfer usually arrives the next working day. How much leeway to allow when the book is for a birthday is covered in our article on timing.

Discount codes, gift vouchers and partner codes all go into the same field at checkout and are deducted before you pay. One code can be used per order; a gift voucher, however, can be spent gradually across several items and its balance carries over.
