How Much Does a Custom Book Cost, and What's Included?

9/16/2026

Personalized book pricing line by line: what the digital book includes, what print and shipping cost, what's extra, and where you can save.

How Much Does a Custom Book Cost, and What's Included?
Quick answer

A custom digital book costs $7.99 — that covers the whole story, every illustration, a downloadable PDF and the online reader. A hardcover print copy is $32.99, plus $5.99 for shipping. The audiobook is optional at $3.99. These are one-time payments: no subscription and no fee for downloading again.

What each price covers

Print isn't ordered instead of the digital book — it's ordered on top of it. First the book is created, you read it through and fine-tune it, and only then do you send the finished version to print. That's why the prices add up rather than being an either/or choice.

ItemPriceWhat's included
Digital book$7.99A custom story, 12 illustrated spreads, a cover with your child's name, a dedication page, PDF and online reader, 3 illustration redos
Audiobook$3.99The whole story narrated in the voice you choose, listening in the reader, a QR code in the printed book
Printed book$32.99A4 portrait format, hardcover, heavy coated paper, full-color printing
Shipping$5.99Delivery to the address of your choice, with package tracking
Extra illustration redo$0.39 eachOnly after you've used the 3 redos included in the price

Included in the price, even if others charge extra

These are the things people ask about most, because they're used to seeing them as add-ons.

  • Every illustration
You don't pay per page or per character. The price covers the whole book — 12 illustrated spreads, the cover and the dedication page — no matter how many heroes you add.
  • Unlimited text edits
Once the book is generated, you can rewrite any text in it and the PDF re-lays itself out automatically. It's not a paid "revision" — it's simply part of working with your finished book.
  • Illustration redos
3 redos are included, and the editor shows how many you have left. Each new version is saved as a variant, so you can always go back to the original — a redo that misses costs you nothing.
  • PDF and repeat downloads
The book stays in your account and you can download it again anytime. There's no charge for repeat downloads or for access to the reader.
  • Language and illustration style
Choosing from 30 languages and 20 illustration styles is part of the setup, not a premium upgrade.

What costs extra

Shipping is added to the print order and charged per package, not per copy — a second copy in the same package doesn't double it. The audiobook is an add-on: you can include it with your order or add it later from your account, at the same price.

You only pay for an illustration redo once you've used up the ones included — after that it's $0.39 each, and you can buy anywhere from one to twenty at a time in the editor. In practice, most books are finished without paying anything extra: questionable illustrations are checked and redone automatically before you ever see the book.

What you never pay extra for: storing the book, downloading the PDF again, rewriting text or editing the dedication.

Three typical orders and what you pay

Real examples are the easiest way to see which items add up and which never show up at all. None of this is a bundle — every item can be ordered on its own.

A book to read on a tablet
You pay only for the digital book, $7.99. No shipping, no waiting for a package — the book is in your account within 15 minutes. It's the most affordable way to find out whether your child loves the book before you order a print copy.
A book as a gift under the Christmas tree
You add up the digital book at $7.99, printing at $32.99 and shipping at $5.99. The digital version is part of the deal — it's where you fix the text before sending it to print, and it stays in your account for download after printing.
A book your child can also listen to
Add audio to the digital book for $3.99. A QR code in the printed book links to it, so your child can listen without holding a tablet. You can add audio later for the same price, so there's no need to decide right away.

What doesn't affect the price

The digital book has one price, however elaborate your ideas are. More heroes don't make it more expensive — siblings, parents and the family dog in one book cost the same as a single child. Neither does the language you pick or the illustration style, even though some styles take more work than others.

The length of the dedication, how many times you edit the text and how often you download the book don't matter either. That's intentional: while you're setting up the book, you shouldn't have any reason to hold back on the things that make it truly your child's book.

Only two things actually change the price: a physical shipment (printing and shipping) and illustration redos beyond the ones included.

Why a custom book costs more than one off the shelf

With a regular bookstore book, the cost of the writing and illustrations is spread across the whole print run — ten thousand copies share one illustrator's work. With a custom book, nothing gets spread out: the story is written for one child, and every illustration is created once, for one book, and never used again.

The second difference is printing. A custom book is printed as a single copy on demand, not in a print run — there's no warehouse and no risk of half a pallet going unsold, but there's no volume discount either.

That's why you can't compare offers by the number on the price tag alone. Compare what's included: whether the text and illustrations are created after you order, how many edits are free, and whether printing and shipping are included or charged separately. How to tell a name printed into a stock book from true personalization is covered in our introduction to custom books.

How to pay less

None of these are tricks — they're real options at checkout that people often just don't know about.

  1. 1
Buy several books with a family bundle
Gift vouchers also come in bundles for several books, which work out cheaper per book than buying one at a time. They're handy if you know you'll be buying more gifts within the year — a voucher is valid for one year.
  2. 2
Ship the book straight to the recipient
When you order a print copy, you can enter any delivery address. That saves you from reshipping and paying for a second package when the gift is headed to Grandma anyway.
  3. 3
    Review your printed book
An approved review with a photo earns you a coupon for a free audiobook with your next book; a video review earns a discount on your next digital book. Coupons expire, so this only makes sense if you're really planning another book.
  4. 4
    Add audio later
You can add the audiobook anytime for the same price. If you're not sure your child will use it, you don't have to decide at checkout.

How to pay

You can pay by card or mobile wallet through a secure payment gateway — your card details never reach us.

If you pay by bank transfer where it's offered, keep one thing in mind: the book only starts generating once the money arrives, and a regular transfer can take until the next business day. How much buffer to leave when the book is meant for a birthday is covered in our article on timing.

Discount codes, gift vouchers and partner codes all go into the same field at checkout and are deducted before you pay. You can use one code per order, but a voucher can be spent gradually across several items and its remaining balance carries over.
